On the basis of Kharin's (1989) theoretical study, devices and methods for controlling the instrumental and orientation parameters of horizontal axial meridian instruments are examined. The autocollimation method and a method using a mark in the prime vertical are discussed for two horizontal axial meridian instruments: the axial vertical circle and the axial meridian circle.
