The present status is reviewed of efforts to construct an earth-based solar observatory which will compensate for the distorting effects of the earth's atmosphere on solar observations. Image movement compensation techniques are described, including the recently developed Correlation Tracker. Efforts being made in the area of higher-order adaptive optics are addressed.
