There are 12 ground-based optical telescopes with apertures greater than 8 m in operation or under construction. All of these telescopes will use with some form of adaptive optics to correct in real time the distortions generated by atmospheric turbulence. This talk presents a summary of the state of adaptive optics component and system technology in current use. Engineering performance for real systems is shown, including example artificial satellite images from the Air Force Research Laboratory's 3.5-m telescope at the Starfire Optical Range in New Mexico and astronomical results from the Keck 10-m and Gemini North 8-m telescopes at Mauna Kea. Future prospects for enabling full sky coverage and requirements for very large telescopes (100 m) will be discussed.
