Adaptive control applied to a scanning spectrophotometer for astronomical applications is described. An idealized simulated scanning spectrophotometer model is constructed and a procedure is devised for evaluating system performance in nonadaptive and adaptive modes. An interactive computer system is considered for realizing the adaptive scanning spectrophotometer functions. The system was tested via numerical simulation. It is concluded that adaptive control of an actual scanning spectrophotometer is capable of improving spectrophotometer efficiency appreciably, with the measuring system adapted to the object being measured, an important advantage in the measurement of variable quantities in astronomy.
