It is proposed to equip the focal plane of the Far Infrared Submillimeter Wave Space Telescope (FIRST) with an active-adaptive optics system, which could provide diffraction limited images at wavelengths leas than 100 microns, possibly as short as 10 microns. This considerably broadens the spectral range covered by FIRST and provides at shorter wavelengths a spatial resolution larger than ever obtained in space. Such a high angular resolution mode (0.2 arcsec at 8 microns) would match the highest resolution obtainable with the next generation ground-based telescopes and extend it at all infrared wavelengths.
