Active optics is a general term for optical components whose characteristics are controlled during actual operation in order to modify optical wave fronts. In this paper, the basic concepts of active-optics technology and systems are reviewed along with their historical evolution from early figure-control systems to the recently developed high-bandwidth systems for atmospheric compensation with bandwidths of several hundred hertz. The discussion focuses on coherent (laser) and incoherent (white-light) wavefront sensing techniques, wavefront correction devices, major considerations in system design, and current applications relating to outgoing-wave systems for maximizing the power density of a laser beam on a target and to received-wave systems for maximizing the angular resolving power of a telescope viewing a distant object through a turbulent atmosphere. Two models are used for performance analysis and optimization of closed-loop systems. Some speculation is made on future developments of active optics.
