Change can be made in your department through the use of junior faculty chairing committees such as the Diversity Committee. By using this bottom-up appraoch in changing/creating departmental policy (as opposed to a top-down approach that utilizes senior faculty and upper-level management), junior faculty can be more engaged in creating/changing departmental policies and concerns such as addressing unconscious bias. In this talk, I will discuss actions that junior faculty can take to initiate this bottom-up approach. I will use addressing unconscious bias and diversity in hiring and retention as an example. By making a small change in policy at the department level, a larger change in policy can subsequently be made at the college or university level.
