The forbidden radiation 2655.6 Å (61S0-63P0) emitted by the odd isotopes of mercury is polarized in a magnetic field, even if the atoms are isotropically excited. The degree of polarization has been calculated for the case of 199Hg. The experimental results agree with the theoretical predictions.
