Underwater acoustic detection is a promising experimental tool to investigate the astrophysical neutrino spectrum at E > 1016 eV. Several collaborations are currently working in the field, despite technological constraints imposed by the hostile deep sea environment. We will present the results obtained by several running experiments (SAUND, ACORNE, BAIKAL, NEMO-OnDE, ...) and we will discuss the main projects of large-scale acoustic stations presently proposed and under construction. Interdisciplinary and technological issues connected to these pioneering works will be highlighted.
