We have implemented a method for measuring fractional blood volume in tissue, and for the first time have quantitatively verified the technique in a dialysis canister "phantom", and applied it in lung tissue. The known geometrical parameters and specifications of the dialysis canister allow an extremely accurate determination of the "intravascular" volume, a measurement that was matched extremely well by the MR method. We then used the method to successfully determine microvascular blood volume in an unfixed excised rabbit lung, and found good agreement with previously measured values obtained by microscopic examination of fixed specimens.
