A one order of magnitude improvement is reported on the accuracy of a laboratory model of a tether platform connected to a space station via a wire 2-10 km long. A new experimental apparatus based on two CCD cameras, an optical system of mirrors, and a He-Ne laser beam is used to simulate the control system for a telescope mounted on the platform. A computer-based vision system is used for tracking. The control loop has been optimized taking into account the disturbances produced by simulating the effect of the tether dynamics and reproducing the slewing maneuver effect of the telescope on the system dynamics.
