Accelerators are fundamental tools for the advancement of particle physics and, increasingly, many areas of basic and diagnostic science. At the scientific frontier, both high energy and luminosity are important figures of merit. Fermilab is actively working on improving the luminosity of its Tevatron Collider to increase the scientific reach of two important experiments, DØ and CDF. The Large Hadron Collider is under construction at CERN with first operation scheduled in 2007. The international scientific community is approaching a technology decision on the Linear Collider, the next very large machine on the scientific horizon. Consideration of the issues related to and status of these machines is important for developing and upgrading the associated detector facilities. Therefore an accelerator session is essential at a meeting on advanced instrumentation in particle physics.
