The significance of deviations of hard x-rays and gamma-ray continuum spectra form a simple power law is discussed in the framework of thick target nonthermal models. It is shown that in some flares such deviations can be explained neither by the radiative transfer effects nor by the effects of electron transport processes. Some of these deviations, therefore, must be attributed to the acceleration mechanism. The equations and various approximations involving stochastic acceleration by plasma turbulence is reviewed and it is shown that this acceleration process when combined with the expected collisional and synchrotron loss processes can account for these deviations.
