Given that oxygen is a major contributor to opacity in stellar interiors, its abundance must be known accurately in order to calculate the ages of stars, and, in particular, the ages of globular clusters. We propose to determine the oxygen and nitrogen abundances in field red giants with [Fe/H] ≤ -1.0 by observing the OH lines at 3150 Aand NH lines at 3350 Å. The ratio of O/Fe in stars with low [Fe/H] has been uncertain with data from the [O I] lines, yielding [O/Fe]=+0.4 +/- 0.1 for stars with [Fe/H] ≤ -1.0, while data from the 7775 Å triplet in the subdwarfs showing the [O/Fe] rises from +0.4 at [Fe/H]=-1.0 to about [O/Fe]=+1.0 at [Fe/H]=-2.7. The OH lines provide a new source of oxygen abundances that cannot be affected by possible departures from LTE that may (but have not been shown to) affect the 7775 Atriplet. The determination of the nitrogen abundance in each star will allow us to see if any oxygen has been converted to nitrogen via the CNO bi-cycle in the interior of the observed star.
