We selected 76 Southern hemisphere stars from Paczyski et al. (1999, Cat. ) who published a sample of 308 red clump giants selected from the Hipparcos catalogue with a relative parallax error of less than 10 per cent. The stars were observed with the Fiber-fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph (FEROS), which was attached to the 1.52-m telescope of the ESO (La Silla, Chile), in 2002 August.
