Upper limits of less than one part per billion have been established by mass spectrometry for U-233, U-236, and U-237 isotopes in uranium from samples of Belgian Congo pitchblende and Colorado Carnotite. The new upper limit of one-half part per billion U-236 in the pitchblende is smaller than would be expected from the measured Pu-239:U-238 ratio of 2·8 × 10 12 in the ore, assuming the Pu-239 was formed exclusively by capture of thermal neutrons; and much smaller than would be expected from previous plutonium assays of Belgian Congo pitchblende samples.
