The paper examines the convective amplification of Alfven ion-cyclotron waves in the earth magnetosphere by high-energy anisotropic ring-current protons and the absorption of these waves by cold heavy ions. The effect of the longitudinal nonuniformity of the geomagnetic field on the particle-wave cyclotron resonance is taken into account. It is shown that, when the density of the hot protons is of the order of the density of the cold heavy ions, the heavy ions can absorb the entire energy of the excited wave.
