The intensive measurements of absorption made at Ibadan during the I.G.YE have completed a sequence of observations started in 1953 and covering the whole period of increasing solar activity. The variation of the absorption at Ibadan with solar activity, sun's zenith distance and lunar time has been investigated using these data. The variation of the absorption L with sunspot number, R, can be expressed in the form L = L0 (1 + bR), where L0 is the absorption at sunspot minimum. The mean value of the constant b is found to be 2·6 × 10-3 at a frequency of 2·4 Mc/s with rather higher values in local winter than in local summer. At 5·7 Mc/s b is about 3·4 × 10-3 indicating that there is less control by solar activity in the D-region than higher up. The variation of L (2·4 Mc/s) with the solar zenith angle x is of the form L [is proportional to] (cosx)n. For the I.G.Y. data, from the diurnal variation, the mean value of n is 0·63, the values again being slightly higher in local winter (0·69) than in summer (0·59). The value of n as measured from the seasonal variation of the noon absorption is 0·9 compared to about 1·6 at sunspot minimum. A semi-diurnal lunar variation in L has been detected in the absorption data at 2·0 and 2·4 Mc/s at sunspot minimum. The amplitude of the variation is about 0·35 dB with maximum absorption occurring at 2·7 hours lunar time.
