The general solution of the equations of radiation transfer in a semi-infinite anisotropic medium are obtained assuming conditions of local thermodynamic equilibrium, and profiles of the Stokes parameter are calculated for absorption lines in a strong magnetic field, taking atomic orientation into account. Analysis shows that atomic orientation by the magnetic field leads to circular polarization in all the frequencies of optical light, and that the value of such polarization may attain several percent in a field of about one to ten million gauss. It is noted that the observed effect may be responsible for the circular polarization observed in magnetic white dwarfs.
