Several Seyfert 1 galaxies show prominent absorption lines in their ultraviolet spectra. Most notably these include NGC 3516 and NGC 4151, two of the rare Seyfert 1 galaxies which also have bright, extended narrow line regions. In the well studied case of NGC 4151, the absorbing gas is dense and outflowing, with column densities sufficient to block ionizing radiation. The outflowing gas may play a crucial role in collimating the ionizing radiation. We propose to study the UV absorption line spectra of additional Seyfert galaxies in which our line of sight may be close to the edge of the collimating material. Observational indicators of these rare cases include bipolar extended narrow line regions in a Seyfert 1 galaxy; intrinsic, variable soft X-ray or UV absorption; historical transitions between Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2; line and continuum variability in a Seyfert 2. From the absorption-line spectra we will determine the kinematics of the absorbing gas, its physical properties, and its approximate radial distance from the ionizing source based on photoionization models for the gas. We will ascertain if this gas may provide the collimation mechanism for the ionizing radiation, and develop a more detailed view of how the obscuring material in unified models of Seyfert galaxies determines what we see.
