A strict asymptotic theory of absorption line formation in a homogeneous weakly absorbing cloudy atmosphere of large optical thickness is presented. The main formulas which determine the profile and equivalent width of the absorption line are derived for both diffusely reflected and diffusely transmitted light. The formation of the 'superweak' absorption line when the multiple scattering processes do not disturb the initial profile of the absorption coefficient of the line or the molecular band is discussed. A method is described for calculating the line profile in the general case of the arbitrary dependence of the optical properties of the atmosphere on the optical depth.
