UV absorption cross sections of three chlorofluoroethanes (CH3-CF2Cl - HCFC 142b, CH3-CFCl2 - HCFC 141b, and CF3-CHCl2 - HCFC 123) which are photodissociated in the stratosphere have been measured with uncertainties of 2 percent. It is found that a substantial fraction of these molecules is destroyed in the troposphere by hydroxyl radicals. The results indicate that the lifetime and ozone depletion potential of these molecules are significantly lower than those of the chlorofluorocarbons 11 and 12.
