The role of associated absorption systems and dust obscuration close to the central engines of AGN is not understood. Using the low-frequency selected Molonglo Quasar Sample, we have discovered evidence for direct links between obscuration/absorption and the radio properties of quasars that shed new light on the physics of radio source evolution. To establish these results unequivocally, we require near-UV spectroscopy with STIS on the HST of a complete set of 19 Molonglo quasars with 0.7
