Abstract

Differential and integral cross sections for the 3P - 3D0 (989 A) transition observed in the dayglow and aurora are reported at incident energies from 20 to 200 eV. The results of a reanalysis of the authors' previous data on the 3P - 3S0 (1304 A) atomic oxygen transitions using computer fitting of the differential cross sections to arrive at improved integral cross section results are also reported. The O I 3P - 3S0 (989 A) differential cross sections vary smoothly with the incident energy and are flatter with scattering angle at lower incident energies, as expected. The absolute integral cross sections agree with the theoretical shape at higher energies. The present value is much lower than previously obtained ones and appears to provide much better agreement with auroral and dayglow 989 A emission intensities.
