Experimental cross sections are reported from direct electron impact excitation of atomic oxygen to single excited states. The measurements were made with an incident energy electron spectrometer coupled to a microwave discharge free supersonic jet expansion source which produced a jet of O2, H, O and He. The O/O2 ratio normally exceeded 2.5, and impact energies of 100 eV were obtained. Data were taken on the relative densities of species in the jet, the forward electron energy loss spectrum, and the relative differential cross sections (DCS) as viewed at various scattering angles from 0-90 deg. The 3P yields 3S0 transition was found to have an extremely forward peak and to decrease by almost 5 orders of magnitude in moving from a 0 to 90 deg scattering angle. The data are considered crucial to the characterization of the upper atmospheres of earth, Mars and Venus.
