This paper reports laboratory measurements of the direct electron impact excitation cross sections of the atomic oxygen 3p3P and 3p5P transitions from the ground state. The initial cross section study reported here has been done at 30 eV incident electron energy which is typical of the median secondary electron energy in the nightside aurora and the characteristic energy of the Maxwellian distributions observed in the dayside cusp. The 3P (10.99 eV) and the 5P (10.76 eV) state excitations are also important for the determination of the cascade contribution to the atomic oxygen 1304 Å (3S0-3P) and 1356 Å (5S0-3P) transitions which are fed by the transitions corresponding to the 8446 Å and the 7774 Å emissions.
