In its passive working mode, the WHISPER (waves of high frequency and sounder for probing of electron density by relaxation)instrument that is aboard the CLUSTER spacecraft behaves like a simple natural wave receiver. Electric field spectra, from about 2 kHz to 80 kHz, are computed onboard and then transmitted to the ground. When active, the WHISPER triggers plasma resonances at characteristic frequencies. It is consequently a radio wave transmitter sending very short pulses at given frequencies, which include the plasma frequency, and a receiver detecting the medium responses. From the frequency locations of the resonances recorded by the WHISPER, the total electron density may be determined from the solar wind down to the inner parts of the Earth's magnetosphere. In some cases, the magnetic field strength may also be given and the hot to cold electron density ratio estimated. The way the resonances are identified and the ability of the WHISPER to perform valuable diagnosis of the plasmas encountered by the CLUSTER spacecraft are highlighted in the current presentation.
