The global P-station corrections of Dziewonski and Anderson (1983) and the synthetic S-station corrections of Woodhouse and Dziewonski (1984) are compared statistically, and the regional variations of the slope (a) of the linear expression relating them are analyzed using the global tectonic models of Okal (1977) and Jordan (1981). The two data sets are found to have a correlation coefficient of 0.59 and an average a value of 3.61 + or - 0.13. The significant differences between mountain areas (a = 2.7 + or - 0.3) and shields (a = 4.5 + or - 0.4 or a = 5.7 + or - 1.5 for the Okal and Jordan models, respectively) are attributed to thermal heterogeneities in mountains and to the effects of undulations of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary under shields.
