A wide-angle Cerenkov detector of extensive air showers is described, and results of test runs conducted on the ice cover of Lake Baikal in March 1992 are reported. The Cerenkov detector consists of four Kvazar photodetectors with 37-cm-diameter photocathodes. In its simple implementation, the effective area and the accuracy of energy determination of the Cerenkov detector are comparable with those of scintillation detectors; the angular resolution of the Cerenkov detector, however, is much higher.
