A spatially varying closure approximation based on ellipsoidal intensity modeling is used to examine radiative transfer in a gray gas at LTE. The model permits the representation of both extreme anisotropic radiation distribution and isotropic distribution. The modified differential approximation for the permissible variable closure adjusts to the degree of isotropy locally within a field. The cases of planar transfer, and transfer in infinite prism regions and annular regions are considered.
