The available continental seismic reflection and refraction data are examined in the context of a unified theory of craton evolution. In particular, it is argued that the Moho and crust/mantle boundary beneath the continents evolve in a predictable manner through the continental evolutionary sequence. Lithospheric delamination is considered to be an ubiquitous process in collision zones and play a critical role in the chemical evolution of continental crust, pushing the bulk composition away from mafic toward intermediate composition. It is further argued that mafic magmatic additions to the crust are largely responsible for determining its geophysical signature, including its gross seismic reflection character, thickness, average velocity, and conductivity structure.
