A 2D model of ion composition from 15 km to the stratopause is presented. The model accounts for the latitudinal variation in the ionization rate by galactic cosmic rays and in the concentration of neutral species which affect ion chemistry. The altitude of the crossover point of proton hydrates (PHs) over nonproton hydrates (NPHs) is found to vary with latitude. The meridional distribution of ion composition and a comparison with the available observational data are presented. A 2D meridional model of negative ions in the atmosphere is presented. It shows that NO3(-) and HSO4(-) core ions with HNO3 and H2SO4 ligands are the most abundant negative regions in this region of the atmosphere. The negative ion composition appears to be determined by sulfuric acid vapor and nitric acid concentrations.
