Torsional Alfvén waves are a helical form of non-compressive, shear Alfvén waves that have been widely discussed in the laboratory context and in the solar physics literature, but rarely in the solar wind context. They produce vortical flows about a central axis and correlated changes in velocity, V, and magnetic field, B. We have used a combined deHoffman-Teller frame and ideal MHD reconstruction technique to demonstrate that a torsional Alfvén wave was embedded within a small magnetic flux rope observed in the solar wind by both the ACE and Wind spacecraft on 12 January 2003. The flux rope had a diameter of ~1 million km, was rooted at both ends in the solar photosphere, and had an axis directed nearly radially Sunward. It seems likely that the torsional wave was generated by distortions produced within a pre-existing flux rope that erupted from the Sun. Our examination of previously identified small flux ropes in the solar wind indicates, somewhat surprisingly, that torsional Alfvén waves are relatively rare in such events.
