It is suggested that deviations of the geomagnetic dipole moment from a short-term mean dipole moment may be modelled as a linear sum of previous, random, effects. Analysis of available archaeomagnetic data indicates that such deviations are serially correlated up to intervals of at least 1000 years, but there does not appear to be any significant serial correlation over intervals of 2000 years. This suggests that the effect of a deviation from a short-term mean dipole moment persists no longer than about 2000 years. The model provides a continuous function based on stochastic variations over a very short time interval and is consistent not only with the archaeomagnetic data but also with the observed distribution of palaeomagnetically determined virtual dipole moments for the last 5 m.y.
