The solar wind at the L1 point has to reach the magnetosphere before having an interaction with the magnetosphere and producing a geophysical effect. Using high time resolution of geomagnetic data and solar wind data and considering the delayed geoeffectiveness of solar wind, we analyzed the interplanetary sources for 4 intense geomagnetic storms. The results show that there is seemly a threshold for the solar wind density. When solar wind density is lower than the threshold, the solar wind will not make contribution to the development of the main phase of a geomagnetic storm, even in the presence of a sustained strong southward interplanetary magnetic field, or a sustained strong solar wind electric field.
