A time-independent model for the radial distributions of gas and magnetic field in M31 and the Galaxy has been developed. Total gas pressure profiles taken from observations were used as input in the MHD equations. From the model the magnetic field responsible for (and maintained by) the gas distribution has been obtained. The field has an azimuthal component only, and can be used to predict the synchrotron radio emission, in good agreement with observations. A nucleus of unseen gas is required at the center of both galaxies.
