Salient features of the ESO's 3.6-m New Technology Telescope (NTT), which will be erected at La Silla, are discussed. The NTT's primary mirror is designed to maintain the telescope in peak optical shape by means of a system of sensors and computer-controlled motors which analyzes and adjusts the shape of the primary mirror and the position of the secondary mirrors automatically in the course of observations. The NTT can obtain images that are three times sharper than those of its predecessors. A diagram of NTT's optical system is included.
