Aplanatic two-mirror telescopes were systematically studied. Third-order designs were obtained by virtue of closed-form solutions of the aberration equations. These equations comprise the first part of a two-stage computer program. Detailed ray trace analyses were performed on the various designs using a conventional ray trace program in tandem with the closed-form solutions. The performance of the telescopes was determined, and the Aplanatic Cassegrain and Gregorian types are analyzed from the standpoint of the effects of misalignments.
