We present initial results from a systematic study of massive proto- stellar candidates. A sample of 69 objects, chosen based on IRAS colours and fluxes and absence of significant 5 GHz continuum emission, was observed in various tracers with the Effelsberg 100-m and the IRAM 30-m telescopes. The main results so far are: (1) emission from hot-core tracers CH3CN and CH3OH detected in most sources; (2) line wings in CO(2rightarrow1) and SiO emission detected indicative of outflow activity towards most; (3) maser emission from methanol (6.7GHz) and water (22 GHz) seen towards many; (4) dust emission imaged at 1.3 mm towards some; derived masses show evidence for an evolutionary trend from pre-UCHII regions to UCHII regions to main sequence suggesting a potential observational indicator of age among high-mass proto-stars.
