In order to obtain a rich sample of molecular clouds within 1-3 kpc of the Sun, 13CO and 12CO surveys have been carried out by using two 4-m telescopes at Nagoya University, one of which, NANTEN, is now being operated at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. Each telescope has a beam size of 2.7', corresponding to 1 pc resolution at 1 kpc distance. These large-scale surveys with high angular resolution made it possible to carry out statistical studies of the properties of the clouds and their relation to star formation activities. Some of the results obtained by using 450 13CO clouds along the Galactic plane ({88}o < L < {130}o and {170}o < L < {196}o) are as follows: The line width and the size show a power law relation with an index 0.28 +/- 0.06, smaller than 0.5, often derived from the previous 12CO studies, while the dispersion in a fitting is larger. Most of the clouds are not gravitationally bound in the absence of the external pressure. The star forming 13CO clouds have less Mvir / MLTE, suggesting that a cloud with high kinetic energy compared with the cloud gravitational energy has a small probability of star formation.
