Planetesimal accumulation theories and gaseous protoplanet theories of planetary formation are discussed. The scope of phenomena that should be explained by a theory is considered, and unresolved problems associated with planet formation are surveyed. The significance of isotopic anomalies and supernovas is examined. It is noted that satellite formation is virtually ignored by the two types of planetary formation theories.
