The EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory images gamma rays in the energy range from 30 MeV to over 30 GeV, limited at the upper end by collecting power. One of the most significant findings of this detector and of the mission as a whole has been the detection of over 60 blazars. In the EGRET energy range, these sources are characterized by high luminosities, and many of them are highly time variable. These properties indicate that gamma ray emission occurs in relativistic jets that are thought to be associated with blazars. The power emitted in the EGRET energy range dominates that at lower wavelengths underscoring the significance of the gamma ray data in under- standing the jet processes. This talk will summarize the EGRET observations including the spectra and time variability in high energy gamma rays. Several multiwavelenth campaigns have looked for differences in the light curves as a function of energy during flares to gain insight into the jet production mechanism. These findings will be reviewed also. Finally, some global differences are seen between Bl Lacs and flat spectrum radio quasars that together make up the blazar class. These features will be described.
