The EISCAT and SOUSY VHF radars obtained high-resolution observations of the vertical velocity field near the high-latitude summer mesopause in northern Norway in 1987. An energetic field is detected whose motions exhibit a high degree of vertical coherence and a quasi-periodic structure. Frequency spectra computed for each radar are found to exhibit substantial variability, while vertical wavenumber spectra are noted to be variable in amplitude and to possess slopes approaching -3 at lower wavenumbers. These results suggest an energetic spectrum of gravity wave motions near the mesopause which has a large vertical flux of wave energy.
