The sensitivity of the FEU-157 photomultiplier with a GaAs photocathode in the wavelength range 700-900 nm is higher than that of the widely used FEU-79 photomultiplier. When operated with faint light sources, however, the noises of the former at room temperatures exceed the useful signal. The noises could be reduced by cooling the photocathode. A device is described which has been designed for studying the temperature dependence of FEU-157 noise characteristics in the single-electron mode. Results of measurements are given. It is concluded that, for observations of faint light sources, the photocathode must be cooled to about -30 C.
