We will present the results of a study of the occurrence of different sorts of wave activity in the downward current region and poleward boundary region of the pre-midnight auroral region associated with ion conic production. While it has been established that most ion outflow in these regions is associated with so-called broadband ELF wave activity, no study has explored the relative occurrence of the actual wave phenomena responsible for that BBELF wave activity. We will use spectral and interferometric data from the FAST satellite in the 2000-4000 km altitude range in order to discriminate between the known sources of BBELF activity and establish the relative occurrence rates of each type of phenomena. Several disparate physical phenomena are known to produce the BBELF wave signature: actual electrostatic and electromagnetic waves in the ELF band (from a few tens to a few hundred Hz, or from the O+ cyclotron frequency to several times the H+ cyclotron frequency), ELF and VLF signals from electron holes, and Doppler-shifted spatially-irregular electric fields. Each of these phenomena will interact with the ions in a different way, and have been predicted to lead to rather different ion heating rates (a few eV/s to keV/s), so it is important to distinguish between them in statistical studies of ion heating and outflow.
