Ionospheric radar data provides evidence of a direct response on the nightside of the earth to upstream changes in the interplanetary parameters. The nightside boundary of the polar cap, identified by a reversal in the east-west flows, is seen to expand equatorward coupled with associated flaring of the magnetotail. The polar cap area thus appears to increase in response to dayside reconnection. The lag between dayside cause and ionospheric effect is found to be very short. It is hypothesized that, due to the rapid retreat of the polar cap boundary, the onset of nightside reconnection is delayed.
