Statistical model calculations have been made to determine 23Mg+n reaction rates in the temperature range 0.5-5 × 109oK and to investigate their competition with the β+ decay of 23Mg during carbon burning in stars. To check the validity of the statistical model in this mass region, the 23Na(p, n)23Mg reaction cross section was measured from Ec.m. = 4.85-10.5 MeV, with particular attention to the astrophysically relevant energy range Ec.m. = 4.85-5.9 MeV. As a further test of the model, the cross sections for other 23Na+p reaction channels were measured over the narrower energy interval and compared with the model.
