Long sequences of relatively quiet day magnetic variations, observed at earth stations near 125 E longitude, were examined, with a focus on the East Asia region in 1976. Data were gathered at 19 stations and comprised hourly mean values of the horizontal magnetic field component. Sq activity and field-aligned currents were found to account for the observed diurnal variations in the magnetic field, except during the winter. The vortex currents tilted toward the east, and the northern vortices crossed the magnetic equator into the southern hemisphere in July and Sept. It is suggested that the field-aligned currents flow from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere in the morning on days close to the northern summer and autumnal solstices, then reverse the flow in afternoons during the equinoxes. Electric field transference could have occurred at low altitudes in the northern winter, judging on the basis of the penetration of the southern Sq current vortex into the northern hemisphere at the northern winter solstice.
