In order to detect possible longitudinal differences in the behavior of thermospheric dynamics in the vicinity of the F2-layer, the meridional wind was evaluated using ionosonde data for a set of latitudinally aligned ionosonde stations at 35 deg S and N. The data base used corresponds to 1984. Using hourly wind values, the mean monthly daily and background wind were determined for each location. These observational results were compared with the HWM 87 wind model predictions under similar geophysical conditions. A good agreement is observed between this model and the experimental results recorded by the Australian stations and Wallops Island. An important feature of this analysis is the existence fo permanent and semipermanent longitudinal variations. These are not random, but rather appear to show a global trend and to be slowly varying.
