FORMOSAT3 was launched in April of 2006. It consists of six low earth orbit (LEO) satellites at height of 800 km. Its main scientific goal is to utilize the radio occultation (RO) signals to infer atmospheric parameters, including refractivity, temperature, pressure, and relative humidity fields. The number of viable RO events is currently between 1000-2500 per day, of which 100-200 events fall into the Polar Regions. Consequently, the FORMOSAT3/COSMIC observations are expected to play a key role in the study of polar atmospheric activities. In this paper, we perform a statistical analysis of the gravity wave activity in the polar regions using FORMOSAT3/COSMIC RO data. The analysis shows the gravity wave activities in the polar regions are strong in winter and spring. The average potential energy is the largest in spring in Antarctic region, while the largest in winter in Arctic region. The averaged gravity wave potential energy increases with height up to 35km. In Antarctic region, gravity waves with high potential energy occur over the Antarctic Peninsula and the Transantarctic mountains. In Arctic region, gravity waves with high potential energy occur around 30E and 150E in winter and between 30E and 120E in spring.
